CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Coop left AB to shut down the office for the evening and dropped Gus with his dad and Camille before he continued to Emily’s house. She lived in Franklin, about thirty minutes from Coop’s domain.

He made his way to the large gate hung between thick stone pillars that made up the fencing surrounding the acreage. He pressed the intercom button, and the gate swung open. The long driveway that ran through green fields led to a house tucked into the trees.

Coop parked the Jeep and followed the stone walkway to the front door of the dark-wood structure. The angular style of it reminded Coop of homes popular in the 1970s. He waited at the door of the split-level home for a few moments before a blond woman he recognized as Emily Harper opened it. She welcomed him inside with a warm smile.

“Come on in and have a seat in the living room.” She led him to an open room on the main level with a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace and oversized leather couches. “Can I get you anything to drink?”

Coop held up his hand. “No, thank you. I appreciate you seeing me and don’t want to take up more time than necessary.”

“Lois speaks very highly of you.” She took a seat on the couch and motioned to the other one adjacent to it for him.

“She’s been very helpful getting me access to people who were at the gala the night Michelle Roberts was murdered.”

She shook her head. “It’s truly horrific. While we differed in style and approach, Michelle and I shared many of the same underlying policy beliefs.”

“As you probably know, Michelle was killed in the library. I’ve been interviewing guests to determine their whereabouts during the incident. From talking with others, you were in the area of the library, in that main hallway.”

She nodded. “Yes, I visited the restroom. I rushed to it in fact, while the actors told people to check their envelopes for directions. I wanted to beat the rush.”

“Did you see Ms. Roberts or go into the library while you were there?”

Emily shook her head. “No, I didn’t see Michelle there. I saw her earlier in the evening when I was roaming around the room before I took my seat. I never saw her again.”

“Did you notice anyone go into the library or see others in that area?”

She sighed. “I remember seeing Marcus and Randy when I came from the restroom. Neither of them was overly friendly when I said hello. They seemed to be on a mission and were moving quickly down the hallway. Daniel from Governor Brown’s office was there. I saw him heading toward the restroom as I left the hallway. I’m not sure where he was coming from, as I didn’t really take notice. There were quite a few people milling about with some playing the game and searching for clues.”

Coop nodded. “Did you talk with Randy about the audio Michelle leaked?”

Her eyes widened. “We talked for a few minutes before dinner. He was doing his best to salvage his reputation and assured me it was taken out of context.
